things that moved me
no. 369A girl in a red school uniform stood on the sidewalk to my left, gesturing across the street at something to my right.
We briefly made eye contact, then I followed her eyeline and saw a woman down the side street putting something in her car and closing the trunk. The girl jogged past me, and when she’d closed half the distance she stretched out her arms, still jogging. She embraced the woman. I took her to be the girl’s mother or an aunt.
“Que linda,” I said to myself as I glanced over my shoulder and smiled.
I was a little emotionally raw, definitely hungover, and in need of tenderness, so the sweetness of it felt like medicine.
